Welcome to Ellis Toussier-Ades Bigio-Antebi's Going Through U.S. Customs With Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and EPO and insulin March 11, 2008 7:11:11 PM To: Ellis Toussier Hello Ellis, Although I didn't have any significant problem in returning with my Humatrope and Protophin, some unexpected things did happen, and the information may be useful for others. The first unexpected thing was that at the standard X-ray search of carry-on items at the Mexico City airport, the inspector saw the vials of medicine on the X-ray, and asked that the items be looked at by another inspector. The other inspector immediately pulled out one of the vials and inspected it closely. I showed her my prescriptions. She compared the prescriptions with the labels on the vials and was satisfied, and I went on my way. Continental Airlines did their own complete inspection of carry-on items since they could not be sure that the Mexican inspection would always meet U.S. Transportation Security Administration standards. The Continental Airlines inspector found the vials and looked at them closely. I showed her the prescriptions, and she was immediately satisfied, and I boarded the plane. On the flight from Mexico City to my intermediate stop in Houston, I thought a lot about exactly what to write, if anything, on my U.S. customs form. I decided that the best thing to do was to declare the Humatrope and Protophin as "MEDICATIONS PRESCRIBED FOR ME BY A MEDICAL DOCTOR IN MEXICO" and declared the value at $300. This turned out to be the very best thing to do. When going through customs in Houston, most U.S. citizens were let through after a few seconds of conversation with the customs agent. When I approached the customs booth, their was a "ding" on an alarm signifying that it was exactly 3 p.m. At this particular booth, I was informed that met that I had been randomly selected for thorough and detailed screening by customs, and I was sent to a separate area for a detailed screening. The customs agent who did the detailed screening asked about the vials of medicine, I showed him my prescriptions, and he seemed satisfied about the way that I had declared them on the customs form, then the customs agent started talking about how the FDA was a thoroughly corrupt agency that approved all of the bad medicines, and blocked all of the good medicines, and that people were wise to buy their medicines in Mexico. He did a very through inspection of all my luggage, but during the whole time our entire conversation was about how awful and corrupt the FDA was, so I wasn't worrying about my prescription medicine getting through customs. When I first made my trip, I thought that the worst thing that could happen would be to be randomly selected for one of these detailed customs inspections on the return trip; but it turned out that I was selected, and it was no problem at all. After going through U.S. customs, everyone had to be re-screened for dangerous items by the U.S. TSA. The U.S. screener didn't see, or wasn't concerned by, the vials of medicine that went through the X-ray screening at Houston. I would recommend that others returning with medicines purchased in Mexico make a customs declaration that is very similar to what I did. I have since learned that customs agents become especially suspicious of items that they find that are not declared. I think that it was also a good thing that I only brought the vials of medicine back with me, and I did not bring the liquid dilutents back with me.
