Slowing Down and Reversing the Clock with G.H.B.
By
Dr. James Hughes
The world of anti-aging medicine is changing rapidly. Many new theories have evolved in the past decade that eclipse some of their predecessors. Wear and Tear theory will continue to be with us for some time, with many integrated components. Free Radical theory will be continuously refined as we gain more knowledge of how these electron thieves interact and are neutralized. We already know a good deal about free radicals but holes do still exist in our theory.
Genetic theory has progressed dramatically with not only the discovery of telomeres, but also of an aging gene. Significant advances have been made in our rediscovery of the mind-body unit. Meditation and newer techniques in mental enhancement can effectively add years to our lives.
We have a long way to go before we sort out the implications from the genetic clocks, and longer still before we can significantly intervene. Neuro-hormonal theory has led to our most aggressive interventions in anti-aging medicine. Innovations in both testing and delivery systems have enabled widespread use of replacement hormones, prohormones, factors, and cofactors.
Human Growth Hormone, or HGH, has been in the spotlight most recently. We know it is manufactured in the pituitary, and is around 80% of the pituitary’s dry weight. We know its release is mediated by a hypothalamic hexapeptide. GHRH or Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone is released into the hypothalamic-pituitary portal system to stimulate the pituitary to release this stored up hGH. As we age the hypothalamic release of GHRH declines and subsequently hGH release is decreased even though adequate pituitary production may be present. (We produce nearly 80%, as much hGH when we are 75 as when we were 20, but released hGH may be as little as 10% of when we were 20).
Since we know that hGH augmentation has widespread anabolic activity, replacement to youthful levels has become a means to enhancing longevity and substantially adding to the quality of life. To that end, secretagogues (substances that stimulate the hypothalamus to release GHRH and subsequently the anterior pituitary to release hGH), exercise regimens, meditation, calorie restriction, and a variety of exogenous hGH administration methods have been utilized. The efficacy and popularity of these products have increased exponentially.
Our search for ever-better secretagogues led to the trial of many substances. At first we found a fair degree of success with the stacked amino acids, arginine, ornithine, lysine and glutamine. These had to be administered in the right balance at the right time on an empty stomach to achieve results. Stacked amino acids remain on the list of the better secretagogues. We found that some sequences of amino acids worked in a similar fashion. Melatonin was found to be a secretagogue on its own.
Exercise has been shown to be a very effective secretagogue, when done in a sequence from aerobic to resistance. A number of chemicals were utilized including GHB (Gamma Hydroxy-Butyrate). GHB was found to be an exceptional secretagogue, with the ability to double hGH all by itself. This ability could be even further enhanced by the addition of melatonin and DHEA, both which allow a small increase in hGH to initiate the formation of a large amount of IGF-1.
GHB has achieved notoriety in the US at the hands of dishonest bureaucrats. A vast misinformation scheme has led to the illegalization of this substance virtually overnight in most states. The FDA itself couldn’t have taken this substance off the market without a legitimate public forum since it is covered under the nutraceutical legislation. GHB, in high doses, induces a deep state of sleep that may render the user unarousable if used in conjunction with alcohol, sedatives, or narcotics. Although the user seems unconscious, they maintain their respiratory drive and aroused without significant difficulty. The state lasts 3-5 hours and resolves without intervention.
The half-life of GHB is only ~45 minutes. There have been no documented cases of isolated toxicity. Cases of bad outcome always involved alcohol, sedatives, or narcotics. It has been used over 30 years in Europe virtually without incident. There are several legitimate uses for this drug in a medical setting that have been precluded by this campaign of heresy. It is effective for people with sleep disorders, pulmonary insufficiency, neuro-degenerative disorders, CHF, immune deficiency, chronic pain disorders, wasting syndromes, and anesthesia demands. In fact, GHB is used extensively in Europe for childbirth as it eases the labor process without pumping the newborn full of toxic metabolites.
All the legitimate uses of GHB have been overshadowed by this vast, malignant misinformation scheme. As an inexpensive supplement with a huge positive repertoire of benefits this campaign is self-serving to two large pharmaceutical houses that are set to market expensive secretagogues based on this chemical in the next few months. Billions of dollars are at stake and will be unnecessarily wasted on this expensive alternative.
GHB is found in nearly every cell of the body. Chemically it is a four-carbon sugar that completely breaks down to carbon dioxide and water. It can be used to form the neurotransmitters, dopamine, norepinephrine, ACH, and GABA, and is an intermediary in this pathway. It can be metabolized by the Kreb’s Cycle. Its concentration seems to decrease in older cells. Since the cells of the hypothalamus are not replaced, these cells contain decreasing amounts of this neurotransmitter precursor. By augmenting this compound, these cells are able to mimic their youthful activity and can release youthful amounts of GHRH. A similar mechanism may also be at work in the pineal gland.
GHB also plays a role as either an endorphin or an endorphin releaser. It also seems to potentiate the activity of a wide variety of receptor sites. The GHRH sites in the anterior pituitary seem to be very sensitive to this type of activation. Since neural cells are responsible for the release or GHRH and subsequently hGH, it stands to reason that other neural cells that release endorphin would decrease that release with advancing age as well.
Since GHB is a sugar, as the cells age there may be a mechanical shift in the intracellular soup that facilitates GHB’s metabolism as an energy source. The accumulation of intracellular debris and the development of ever more complex networks of microfibrils and tubules continues throughout to cell’s lifetime. We find that this is indeed one of the changes associated with aging. Supplementing GHB therefore should also play a role in many chronic pain syndromes, sleep disorders, mood disorders, and deficient protein synthesis.
If this drop in cellular GHB is responsible for the fall-off of GHRH as we age, or an age-related desensitization of the GHRH receptors occurs, a new clock paradigm may have been identified in the wondrous cascade which causes the release of hGH (the cornerstone of anti-aging HRT). The possibilities this opens are enormous. Secretagogues of unequalled efficacy can be formulated inexpensively. (It is possible that the misinformation scheme about GHB had for its motive the proprietary development of such a product by a large pharmaceutical company) Perhaps stimulating isolated divisions of neuronal tissue can restore much of our lost function. This is similar to the days when we formulated morphine and only later discovered the body’s own endorphins. We now have secretagogues (man-made) and it could be that we are only now just beginning to recognize the body’s natural secretagogue, GHB.
Supplementation with GHB is fairly simple, cheap, and non-toxic. Its supply could be unlimited, as it is easy to manufacture it from common materials. Education and proper use can result in a paucity of ill effects and a cornucopia of benefits. Clearly there are many studies yet to be done. To regain validity in this hostile environment of misinformation, scientific, double blind studies will play a vital role. With the vast amount we have learned about this substance over the past three decades, we are very optimistic that the results will bear out our premise. GHB is going to gain respect as it is found to be one of the key missing links in the puzzle of aging theory.
Question to Ellis Toussier: "I was taking butyrolactone products (i.e., verve, somatize, renutrient...) for about 3 years and felt great. Unfortunately, the Federal ban put an end to that...I have not felt the same since.
Orphan Pharamceuticals has released a drug that is identical to GHB
(sodium oxybate?), but I don't suffer from cataplexy.
I was wondering if something like this would be available to me, if
I were to come to Mexico?"
Ellis: "I recommend you should use injectible growth hormnone. I THINK it would give you as good results or perhaps better results as GHB, because the results obtained from GHB are obtained because it causes a release of growth hormone in your body... However, that is probably not as good a dose as you really need. I think you will get all the results using injectible HGH as you got with GHB, or perhaps even better results. Growth hormone is also legal in the United States, so you won't get into trouble with the law. It is also probably less expensive and cost effective than the GHB sold by Orphan Pharmaceutical.
(Did you notice that GHB was first criminalized and outlawed, then it was permitted, because it really does have many useful medical uses, but at a huge price increase to the public?!!)

Recipe for GHB Synthesis
from "GHB: The Natural Mood Enhancer" by Dr. Ward Dean, John Morgenthaler, and Steven Wm. Fowkes. I highly recommend you should buy and read this book, which you can probably find on the internet.
People who have never done any chemistry lab experiments in school or
do not regularly handle chemicals should probably ignore this section. Solvents and other chemicals can be dangerous, and inexperience and ignorance can be serious liabilities when working with them.
Having said this, the synthesis of GHB is among the simplest and safest of chemical procedures. Because of this simplicity and safety, thousands of persons around the world are probably synthesizing their GHB in the privacy of their own kitchens and garages. While some may decry this practice as dangerous, illegal and licentious, remember that GHB is not an illegal medicine in any country except in the United States, and even in the United States it is now a legal medicine, if you don't mind paying the high price. Just like home-brewing of beer and wine became popular when prohibitions banned the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages during the 1920's, home-brewed GHB is probably springing up as a cottage industry in the U.S. to circumvent ill-conceived and irrational FDA policies and state laws designed to criminalize free access to GHB.
General Notes about GHB Recipe
Butyrolactone a cyclic GHB compound with industrial uses as a solvent and chemical precursor to drugs, chemicals, and plastics.
Hydroxide (alkali), which helps drive the hydrolisis (water-catalized breakdown) of butyrolactone into GHB. The hydroxide can be sodium hydroxide which produces sodium GHB (NaGHB); potassium hydroxide which produces potassium GHB (KGHB); or other alkaline.
Water plain, ordinary, distilled water.
Alcohol (100% ethyl alcohol or ethanol) which helps butyrolactone to better mix with the water. It is optional.
Alkalinity and Acidity (pH)
Alkalinity and acididity also influence the reaction. An alkaline (pH greater than 7) favors the formation of GHB. An acidic (pH less than 5) favors the formation of butyrolactone. So by optimizing the reaction conditions to strongly alkaline pH with lots of water, GHB is maximally favored. The GHB recipe includes instructions for monitoring pH.
A Word of Caution pH is a nonlinear scale. pH 9 is 10 times more alkaline than pH 8, which is 10 times more alkaline than pH 7. When working with strongly alkaline agents such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) commonly called lye, caution is essential. A pellet of NaOH which has a pH of 13 will dissolve hair, skin, clothing, paint, and even some plastics! Eye protection is absolutely essential
GHB should not be stored at acidic pH, or it will partially be converted into butyrolactone. Even during short periods of acidic exposure, as when GHB is mixed with acidic fruit juices, or when GHB mixes with hydrochloric acid in the stomach, some butyrolactone is produced. This is not a cause for concern, as GHB and butyrolactone are always in equilibrium with each other, even the GHB which is naturally produced within the human body.
Temperature vs. Time
Increased temperature speeds up chemical reactions. Generally, the higher the temperature, the shorter the "cooking time." GHB can be synthesized without any added heat; it just takes longer.
Heat, however, involves the risk of fire and explosion. Butyrolactone is flammable. Reactions involving butyrolactone should never be conducted over an open flame! Even without exposure to open flame, high levels of solvent in the air can be ignited by sparks from wall switches or electric motors such as might power a ventilation fan, or a kitchen blender. Accidents should be anticipated... What if you drop a liter bottle of butyrolactone and it breaks? Consider a worst-case scenario and make safety plans.
GHB Recipe #1 - Simple Liquid GHB
Note: GHB is ILLEGAL to make yourself in the United States. It is LEGAL to do in every other country in the world, including Mexico where I live. In the United States you can BUY IT LEGALLY from Orphan Chemical, for a hefty price tag. Very conveniently, they made it illegal to make it yourself, but legal to buy it from a pharmaceutical company. This formula for making GHB is put here in answer to requests from around the world for a recipe to make inexpensive GHB. I have never heard of any health crisis in Mexico or in Europe due to GHB, and I doubt any really existed in the U.S. while it was still legal, until a few years ago.
Safety Notice: Wear gloves, safety glasses and old clothes at all times. No exceptions. If any of these chemicals touch the skin, immediately wash well with ample amounts of cold water.
Ingredients:
1. 135 grams (120 ml) gamma-butyrolactone (liquid)
2. 64 grams sodium hydroxide (NaOH, solid) or 91 grams of potassium hydroxide (KOH, solid)
pH test papers (range: 6-11)
Instructions: Read fully before starting.)
1. Pour the butyrolactone into a pyrex bowl or saucepan.
2. Carefully add the NaOH or KOH to the bowl or saucepan.
3. Very carefully add a half cup of warm distilled water and immediately
cover with a loose-fitting lid. The reaction may be rapid if the hydoxide
is finely flaked, or slow if it is present as coarse pellets.
4. If there is no obvious reaction after several minutes, swirl the mixture
gently. If it still does not react, heat the reaction gently. When
it begins to react (rapid boiling) remove it from the heat and let the reaction proceed on its own internally generated heat.
5. As the reaction calms down, it may or may not have gone to completion (ie, be fully reacted.) To ensure completion, heat slowly until it starts to boil. Boil for a few minutes to a half hour. Do not overheat! GHB can be singed or burn if you boil away too much water. Add additional distilled water to replace any that has boiled away.
6. Measure the PH. If it's higher than 7 (alkaline), you can add vinegar (5% acetic acid) or citric acid (do not use ascorbic acid at this point) to lower it to pH 7. It may take up to 5 to 10 tablespoons of vinegar or up to a teaspoon of citric acid to accomplish this task. Neutralizing pH is not mandatory. GHB can be neutralized immediately before consumption by diluting it in orange juice or other acidic fruit juice, or by adding .5 to 1.0 gram of ascorbic acid immediately before consumption.
7. Add enough distilled water or ice cubes made from distilled water to the completed reaction to bring it to a total volume of 750 ml (a little more than 3 cups) to make a solution of approximately 1.3 grams/teaspoonful, or to a total volume of 1 quart (a little less than a liter) to make a solution of approximately 1 gram/teaspoon.
8. Store in a glass container with a conspicuous label in the refrigerator or freezer. Keep away from children, and from adults who are not familiar with GHB. Try to make only as much as you can use in a reasonably short period of time. For longer term storage, store in a freezer.

About Me: My name is Ellis Toussier Bigio. I am "The Amazing Dirty Old Man WHO DOES NOT GROW OLDER..." with emphasis on "who does not grow older" because that is what is most important. In August, 2007, I am 62 years old and I think I look and feel as if I am about 45... I honestly think I might be the healthiest, sexiest, and youngest 61 year old man in history, because nobody before me has ever done what I have been doing since I was 20 to stay young and healthy... and sexy. The fantastic hormones which I am now using and many of the anti-aging therapies that are so good for my health simply did not exist before 1985.
I live in Mexico City, where I am free to buy and sell and teach others around the world to use legal and good hormones, under the supervision of good doctors. I am not a doctor, but many doctors think I know my topic so well that they pay me to consult with me... Some doctors call me "colleague"... and other doctors call me "The Madman in Mexico..." (I prefer "The Madman in Mexico" because people accept that a madman might think differently than they do...) NOTE: I only use and sell LEGAL medicines. Everything I sell is registered with the F.D.A., or Salubridad in Mexico.
I like to think of myself as "the King of Growth Hormone," "the Father of EPO to prevent senility and age related loss of muscle and mobility" and... "the Father and the Mother of using Insulin for non-diabetics to prevent diabetes and aging."
I hope you will think I am "The King" and not "The Madman in Mexico"... but if you do, that is fine with me... He that laughs last, laughs best, and I have no doubt in my mind that I will have the last laugh.

"I want to express my feeling of deepest gratitude to you for teaching me about the significance of EPO. I learned about EPO first from you. Initially I did not pay much attention to it.
What happened to me about two years ago when I was 88, was sudden mysterious anemia (hematocrit 35-38%). My doctor did not worry about my anemia... He said it is mild and stable, there is nothing to worry about... but I felt terribly weak... I felt like I was dying.
Reading what you have written about EPO on Rejuvenation, I asked another doctor to write a prescription for EPO. The results are beyond description. A Miracle! Now I feel stronger... much stronger than I was 10 or more years ago. Now I think better than before, and I publish better books and papers than before.
I wish to express again my deepest feelings of gratitude towards you. I feel you saved my life and restored my high working and creative capacity.

Hi Ellis,
"You might remember me. I am the 66 year old Phoenix firefighter that has the hyperbaric chamber that I use for mountain bike racing. I also let ill
people use my chamber ( for $5.00 which is the actual cost to operate a high pressure oxygen chamber for an hour) that can't afford to go to a hyperbaric oxygen center. I myself have done over 400 dives in the 3+ yrs that I have had the chamber. I owe it to you Ellis to explain what I know because I learned almost everything I now know (including the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen) and about staying healthy from years of following your advice on Rejuvenation."

Hi Ellis,
"I've been a student of health and longevity for all my adult life. I used to own a health/herb store and used to teach herbal healing. I'm fairly knowledgeable about both natural healing and some areas in the fields of medical science, having worked as a biomedical engineer for over 12 years.
I've been a member of Rejuvenation for several years, using many of your suggestions like monitoring blood glucose and using HGH, among other things, both of which have made a big difference for me.."
