The Non-Diabetic Use of a 24 hour insulin
My name is Ellis Toussier. My birth certificate says I was born in Panama, in August, 1945... so my birth certificate is 64 years old. I am a 64 year old person in a 48 year old body.
My fight with aging began when my classmates were not yet interested... I was in my early 20's, when I read "Eat Right To Keep Fit" by Adelle Davis... That book didn't have it all right, but it was the early 1960's and it had most of it right... The home glucose meters that we have today didn't exist yet, so it took me 35 years to get it all right, (but it exists today, so I have it all right now...)...
A way to make laboratory identical human growth hormone and human insulin had not been discovered yet, either... And I was only 20 years old... I was way ahead of my times reading a book on nutrition... At a time when anti-aging medicine did not exist, I was smart enough to realize that the food I choose to let into my body is the most important anti-aging therapy...
Fortunately for me, I live in Mexico. Fortunately for me, too, I studied in the Canal Zone, the American School of Mexico City, and Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana (1963-1967) So I speak and read and write perfect Spanish and English... (Both of my parents were French citizens, born in Egypt... so I also speak French...)
That means I am a Panamanian citizen with a Mexican heart, a dash of French culture, an Arab and Mexican stomach, and an American mind.
Fortunately for me too, I am not a doctor... so I never learned some of the things that doctors have been taught are impossible... Among those impossible things: I never learned that it is impossible to reverse the aging process... I never knew that it is impossible to prevent diabetes... I never knew that diabetes "just happens"... I never learned many foolish things that some doctors say they "know" for sure...
Fortunately, too, I live in Mexico, where I don't need a doctor's prescription and permission for every medicine I would like to buy. Most important of these are Growth Hormone, Insulin, Testosterone, and Erithropoyetin (EPO).
Fortunately, too, the internet was invented in the late 1980's and I got on it in 1995, when it was practically still unheard of in Mexico.
I began to use growth hormone in June, 1998. I began to use testosterone a few years after... After I got excellent results from using those two hormones, I was curious to learn about all the other hormones I could buy in a drugstore.
I began to use insulin in June, 2002, when I was 56 years old. I was scared when I began to use it, because doctors are scared to use it, and like it or not I had "learned" that insulin is "very dangerous"... but I wanted to learn what it could do to control my blood glucose.
I am not a diabetic, but I was not going to wait until a doctor would think I am a diabetic and should use insulin, because except for a few doctors who use insulin themselves, I knew most doctors don't know how to use insulin at all... they are scared to use insulin...
Most doctors have "learned" that insulin is a very dangerous hormone, and that it should be avoided if possible. Dr. Schultz, who is a respected doctor with hundreds of thousands of followers, says something that is 100% false: "The moment you use insulin, your pancreas will stop producing insulin."
Hogwash... Pure, unadulterated hogwash... Pure baloney. Doctor or not, Dr. Schultz is saying something that is FALSE, but he is a doctor so he says it anyways, as if it is a fact.
But it is typical statement by a doctor who does not use insulin but thinks he knows insulin is very dangerous so he advises his patients not to use insulin...
Doctors really have no idea of how to use insulin, unless they use it themselves, which most of them don't. They know what their books tell them, and most of that is mistaken because their books tell them to try everything else before prescribing insulin to their patients.
I know many persons who are ADVANCED diabetic II who don't use insulin because their doctors are telling them to control their diabetes with diet and exercise and metformin... Unfortunately, their blood glucose is sky high for several hours a day, every day... They don't check their blood glucose before and after meals, so they just go on their merry way, and their diabetes advances.
Diet and exercise and metformin don't control blood glucose 24 hours a day, every day, which is what I want for me. And most of the people just leave it at diet and metformin, forget the exercise... who does exercise? That's work!
To make a long story short: I have been using insulin 3 or 4 or 5 times every day since 2002. I am not a diabetic, and I don't expect I will become a diabetic anytime soon because I use insulin.
That means I have taken about 14,000 shots of insulin in 7 years...
I have also measured my blood glucose levels even more than 14,000 times, because I usually check my blood glucose levels 2 or 3 times every time I take insulin. (usually before, and always after...)
When doctors told me that I would become diabetic because I was using insulin, I had to smile and ask "Please explain: How will I become diabetic, if my blood glucose is nearly always below 100?"
Just give me an explanation, how will I become diabetic (ie, blood glucose is out of control) if my blood glucose is always controlled? Of course doctors have no answer for that...
The answer is: I think I will become diabetic eventually, because I think it is wise to pretend that we are ALL advancing towards diabetes, eventually.
But I might not get diabetes until after I am 120...
"Then when I hit 120, I developed adult onset diabetes"
I think I am advancing very very very slowly towards diabetes, and I might never have a BAD CASE of diabetes, even though BOTH of my parents were diabetics by age 65.
I describe my use of insulin on my page: Using Insulin. But now I want to talk about using Lantus in particular, because Lantus is really a breakthrough insulin. It is so good, that I think Eli Lilly stopped producing their own long lasting insulin because Lantus is so much better.
What is so good about Lantus? Lantus gives a very steady dose of insulin for 24 hours... It doesn't peak... there is no guess work... once you get your dose right, that is the dose, and you get a steady control of blood glucose, every minute, every hour, for 24 hours a day. Inject once, and forget it...
(but I don't inject once... I inject two partial doses...)
I copy this graph of Lantus in action, vs. Humulin "N"
I have found that I wake up the next day with a fasting glucose level
of about 100 mg/dl with 10 iu of Lantus... I wake up with a fasting glucose
level of about 90 mg/dl with 15 iu of Lantus... And I wake up with a fasting glucose level in the mid 80's with 20 iu of Lantus...
I have also found that most of the time before I eat, my glucose levels are between 80 and 90 mg/dl, with 20 iu of Lantus. After I eat, my glucose levels are between 90 and 100 mg/dl.
After nearly three months of using Lantus, I have settled that my optimum daily 24 hour dose is 30 units. This much Lantus in a SINGLE DOSE does NOT cause hypoglycemia at any time, and usually my glucose levels are in the high 70's and low 80's, which in my opinion is PERFECT.
Note: These doses are correct for ME, but not necessarily for ANYBODY ELSE, because nobody else has MY PANCREAS. You may learn from my experience, but be certain to advance carefully with the help of a smart doctor (if you can find one...) or write to me and I'll help you.
Having established that 30 units is my ideal SINGLE DAILY DOSE, I then SPLIT UP my daily dose into 20 units in the early morning and 10 units at night. I did this to mimick Dr. Bernstein's use of 24 hour insulin, in two doses... I have found that two split doses gives me a better result IN THE MORNING, which was usually my highest glucose level before I began to use Lantus.
This split dosing of "24 hour" insulin is giving me truly exceptionally good control of my glucose levels. Even if I go out to eat, and I forgot to take fast acting insulin to inject at the restaurant, I am somewhat covered by Lantus.
To sum up how I use insulin: a) In the early morning I inject 20 iu of "24 Hour" Lantus. b) Before most meals I inject 2 or 3 iu of "fast acting" Humalog and after meals I might inject 0 or 1 or 2 iu of Humalog, depending on the result of a glucose test. c) At night, I take 10 iu of "24 Hour" Lantus, again.
If my glucose level is 100 mg/dl after I eat, I inject 1 iu of Humalog (fast acting insulin). If my glucose level is 110 mg/dl or more, I inject 2 iu Humalog. My goal is to get my glucose level down to about 80 mg/dl as soon as possible. If I do not inject insulin, it might stay at about 100 for many hours.
There is no problem that I also have taken Lantus, I won't get hypoglycemia (blood glucose levels too low...) I am very happy if my blood glucose level is 70 mg/dl, but I don't take any insulin to lower blood glucose to 70 mg/dl if my blood glucose level is 80 or 90. (I'm lazy, I guess...)
To put into perspective what 100 mg/dl means: When I started using insulin 5 years ago, I was very happy if my glucose level was BELOW 105 mg/dl. Today I am not happy with 100 mg/dl because I have learned that I can EASILY and SAFELY bring it down to between 80 and 90 mg/dl... so if it is easy and safe, why be happy with 100 mg/dl?
Today, about 3 years after starting to use Lantus and Humalog as described, my glucose levels are less than 100 almost 24 hours per day, and less than 90 mg/dl almost always except after eating, when it might be between 90 and 100. I never get a reading below 70, and I sometimes get a reading between 70 and 80 mg/dl which I think is THE BEST, PERFECT. A few times per month I might get 120 or 130, in which case of course I inject fast acting Humalog.
Subject: Rejuvenation Subscriber Is it possible to feel the difference
Date: Sun, 11 May 2008
Within two hours of injecting the Lantus I feel absolutely great - something
has changed - blood pressure down about 8 points and I have more energy - 12
hours in I am asking why I didn't do this a long time ago - what can it be?
I never really felt different on Growth hormone - obviously skin hair etc
but this you can feel!
I am going with a dose of 30iu Morning and start with 5 iu in the evening
moving to 10 iu if that checks out OK

Frequently Asked Questions about Using Lantus
Is lantus like Humulin R in that 10 ius equals 10 little marks on my syringe ( I use a .3 cc syringe)?
Yes... "10 iu Lantus = 10 little lines on the syringe"... or...
"10 iu of Lantus is equal to a steady dose of about 1 iu Humulin R, for about one day"...
Question: I want to start insulin treatment and do not have a lifestyle which allows me to monitor insulin closely - can I
realistically use a dose on Lantis morning and night to safely control my blood sugar levels without using a
glucose meter throughout the day?
YES... IF I WERE YOU.... BUY A GLUCOSE METER AND DO A LOT OF TESTS WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO... FOR EXAMPLE MAYBE ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS... START WITH A DOSE OF 10 IU OF LANTUS WHICH IS TRULY VERY VERY LITTLE ... I THINK 10 IU OF LANTUS IS EQUAL TO 1 IU OF HUMALOG, AND ONE IU OF HUMALOG WILL LOWER MY BLOOD GLUCOSE ABOUT 10 POINTS, NO FURTHER...
BUT THIS IS MY OPINION, I DON'T KNOW THAT IT WILL BE TRUE FOR YOU... BUT IT WON'T BE FAR FROM CORRECT, EITHER... IN ANY CASE, DO A LOT OF TESTING UNTIL YOU ARE CONFIDENT THAT 10 IU OF LANTUS WILL NOT LOWER YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE MORE THAN 10 POINTS WHEN YOU DO NOT EAT FOR 2 HOURS... THEN... I THINK YOU CAN SAFELY TAKE LANTUS, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER TO EAT SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD FOR YOU, LIKE
CHICKEN OR FISH, OR VEGETABLES...
AND YOU CAN CARRY A SMALL PIECE OF CANDY WITH YOU IN YOUR POCKET... IF YOU WOULD EVER GET OR FEEL YOU ARE A BIT DIZZY OR A BIT WEAK, AND YOU DON'T HAVE
YOUR GLUCOSE METER WITH YOU, AND YOU REMEMBER YOU FORGOT TO EAT, AND YOU THINK TO YOURSELF THAT YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE WENT DOWN, THEN, NO PROBLEM, JUST SUCK ON THAT CANDY AND IN ABOUT 30 SECONDS YOU WILL FEEL BETTER...
I HAVE KNOWN PEOPLE WHO WRITE TO TELL ME THEY FELT THEY GOT HYPO FOR WHATEVER REASON (TOOK INSULIN AND FORGOT TO EAT) AND THEN THEY PANIC AND DRINK A LARGE GLASS OF NORMAL COCA COLA PLUS BREAD WITH MARMALADE PLUS SOMETHING ELSE, ETC... AND ONE HOUR LATER THEIR BLOOD GLUCOSE IS 170 MG/DL ... NOT NECESSARY TO PANIC... WITH THE SLIGHTEST THING THAT YOU EAT, THAT GETS INTO YOUR BLOOD QUICKLY, YOU FEEL BETTER RIGHT AWAY...
FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU FEEL WEAK OR YOU FEEL A BUZZ, DRINK A HALF SMALL GLASS OF COCA COLA OR ORANGE JUICE, IT WOULD BE IN YOUR BLOOD VERY VERY FAST, AND YOU WOULD FEEL IT.... BUT... THE POINT IS THIS... EVEN IF YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE IS AT 50 MG/DL AND YOU FEEL WEAK AND YOU FEEL A BUZZ, IT IS NOT DEATHLY DANGEROUS, IN FACT IT MIGHT BE VERY GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH... IT IS A FUNNY FEELING BUT IT IS NOT A DANGEROUS SITUATION... (I WOULD STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY, IF I WAS DRIVING, BUT OTHERWISE IT IS NOT A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHERE YOU ARE ABOUT TO LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS...) TAKE A BITE OF AN APPLE, OR A SMALL PIECE OF
A BANANA, OR WHATEVER IS ON HAND... YOU WILL STOP HAVING THE BUZZ IN 1 MINUTE OR LESS.
YOU HAVE MORE TO GAIN FROM LEARNING TO CONTROL YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE THAN FROM ANY OTHER
POSSIBLE LIFE EXTENSION THERAPY, AND IT IS ALMOST FREE, IT DOESN'T HURT, AND IT IS THEORETICALLY
FANTASTIC FOR YOUR HEALTH... NOBODY HAS EVER DONE THIS BEFORE, SO I CAN'T TELL YOU THAT IT
WILL EXTEND MY LIFE, BUT I THINK IT WILL....
IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONLY ONE HORMONE TO TAKE WITH ME TO THE MOON, IT WOULD BE INSULIN
BEFORE GROWTH HORMONE, I AM THAT CONVINCED THAT IT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ANTI AGING
THERAPY (TO KEEP BLOOD GLUCOSE UNDER CONTROL)... FORTUNATELY, I CAN AND I DO TAKE INSULIN
AND ALSO GROWTH HORMONE... AND ALSO TESTOSTERONE AND ALSO EPO...
EACH ONE IS FANTASTIC FOR ME, AND I THINK EACH ONE WILL CONTRIBUTE IN A DIFFERENT WAY TO
KEEP ME YOUNG AND HEALTHY FOR LONGER THAN EXPECTED...
FOR THE MOMENT, I WILL BE 65 YEARS OLD IN AUGUST, 2010 AND I THINK IT IS AMAZING... I WALK FAST WHEN I WALK SOMEWHERE, I DON'T LOOK AND I DON'T FEEL OLDER THAN I EVER HAVE, IE, I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME AS I ALWAYS HAVE FELT. AND MENTALLY, I AM BETTER AND MORE CREATIVE THAN I EVER WAS....
SEE MY PAGE: http://www.supermelodie.com
PLAY THE MUSIC AND LISTEN TO THE WORDS AS THE SINGER SINGS IN GERMAN.... I WROTE THE WORDS FOR THE SONGS, IN SPANISH AND IN ENGLISH.... WITH SOME HELP OF SOME TRANSLATORS, BUT IT IS MY PROJECT, AND THE WORDS YOU SEE ARE 90% MY WORK...
(I MENTION THIS TO SAY THAT I AM STILL MENTALLY WELL, AND CREATIVE... AND I AM STILL WRITING ABOUT ANTI AGING FAR FAR FAR MORE AND AHEAD OF ANY DOCTOR I KNOW...)
SO TELL ME HOW MANY MEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD HAVE GOTTEN TO AGE 64 AND THEY THINK THEY HAVE NOT SLOWED DOWN FROM WHEN THEY WERE 25 ? HOW MANY MEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD HAVE INJECTED GROWTH HORMONE FOR 10 YEARS, AND TESTOSTERONE FOR 7 YEARS, AND KEPT THEIR RED BLOOD CELLS ABOUT 20% HIGHER THAN THE POPULATION FOR 7 YEARS, AND HAVE KEPT THEIR BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROLLED PERHAPS 20 HOURS OUT OF 24 HOURS, EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS, AND EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT WHAT I WOULD CALL "CONTROLLED" IT WAS PROBABLY 30 POINTS LESS THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IF I HAD NOT TAKEN INSULIN...
SO... I SUGGEST SINCE YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT IT YOU SHOULD REALLY TRY TO USE LANTUS, IT IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF MY PROGRAM, IN MY OPINION, AND IF YOU CAN DO IT, IT WILL BE VERY VERY GOOD FOR YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH, BECAUSE IT WILL HELP YOU NOT TO LOSE NEURONS, AND YOU *ARE* YOUR NEURONS. - ELLIS
